I online shopped from UO for the first time in years, and I’m really excited about my purchase. I usually chicken out from online shopping because I recognize that I’m often times impulsive… Lol. What’d I buy? High waisted BDG cigarette black grazer pants & an oversized aerosmith “dream on” raglan tee that was on sale. I fully intend to wear this shirt the next time I go to karaoke and hit those series of high notes…. Awesome. I love graphic tees.
I used to love that song when she had her own tv show on MTV or whatever. She had a crush on a whiteboy with dreads, right? And it was like the biggest deal ever that she moved to LA or something. She was like the Miley Cyrus/Taylor Swift before Miley Cyrus/Taylor Swift. I was talking to someone about this song and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out who it was by… Yay! Thanks anon!
For most people who know me today, they know that I hang out with a pretty tight knit group. I spend most of my free time with my boyfriend, Christa, and Lauren. These are my best friends that everyone sees me with, and it’s pretty obvious after one look at my facebook that I hardly hang out with anyone else.
I have two people in my life that I have known since I was a kid, and to call them just ‘friends’ sounds too obscure. Ashley, who calls herself Jashley (that’s been around for a few years but I refuse to call her that) is more like a sister to me than just a friend. I’ve known her since I was in the fourth grade. She walked into my 4th grade classroom at St. Mary’s School in Fullerton, CA with pigtails and a doofy smile on her face. She is one of the strangest and freakiest people I have ever been fortunate enough to meet. No matter how different our lives are and how different our personalities have turned out to be, there is something so sacred between us that I am positive we will be friends forever. And then there is Matthew, and I really don’t have a title to give him at all. He’s been there for me when I needed someone to talk to, and even flew over to Hawaii to be my date to my senior prom. I’ve known matthew since I was in the sixth grade, and I can’t imagine what Los Angeles would be like without him.
I don’t know why I’m so sentimental right now, it might be because I’ve been watching netflix all day and I’m feeling a little weird… but in any case, I just wanted to share about the people that I love.
How would you suggest getting involved in the nightlife industry?
From my understanding, getting into the industry is all about connections. You need to know someone, and they need to know you. I don’t know all that much about the industry, except that it brings in a lot of fast cash. I work the door sometimes at club events, and I only got that position (I only work when asked, kind of like on-call) because I am friends with people who work for the company.
Important factors to think about… - You need to be a really quick thinker. - You need to be able to deal with bitches & jerks with a smile. - You need to be assertive without being inappropriate. - You need to have good hearing. - You need to be able to stay up until wee hours of the night. - You need to always look on point. - You need to be able to wear heels for hours (for girls). - You need a car/mode of transportation.
LK is more informed on nightlife as she has been working at Tsunamis/Ginza/Ka for over a year now. You should go & “ask” her for more answers.
I was wondering what your outfits looked like when you were working at Crooks? I'm going to start working at a streetwear store next week, and I'm not sure how to dress since it's all guys, except for me. I'm not quite sure how to stay swagged up like them but still maintain that femininity haha
My work attire for Crooks was never really meant to match the image so much as it was to prepare for the intense heat. There is a giant glass wall at the facade of the store which, at around 3pm-5pm especially, creates a greenhouse effect on the entire store. It’s crazy hot, like 80 degrees inside the store sometimes. I wore a lot of high waisted short-shorts (from American Apparel) paired with various tanktops & crop tops. Ooh, & rompers for my lazy days.
Just be yourself, because you’re the one they hired — not some streetwear donning chick that you think they want you to be. Most guys don’t find girls that wear head to toe streetwear attractive at all… It just looks like you’re trying too hard. A girl wearing a cap, graphic tee, jeans, and sneakers? I would literally point and laugh if I saw a girl dressed like that who obviously doesn’t look comfortable in it. Just be yourself, and dress according to the temperature inside the store. Swagger is about how you carry yourself, not just what clothes you’re wearing.
I feel like you work at a million different places. Saw you are at Butik now! Are you still working at Aldo/Crooks too? How are you liking retail?
I had 3 part-time jobs (Aldo, Crooks, Happy Haleiwa) and 2 internships (Contrast, Audrey) over the summer, but as I am first and foremost a student I slowed down the pace to just one part-time job (Happy Haleiwa) and one internship (Contrast) so I can focus on my 6 courses that I’m taking this semester. I recently put in my two weeks notice at Happy Haleiwa, and will be working at The Butik. Drop by! There’s always a great selection of clothes for any occasion.
I don’t know how I ended up working so many retail jobs… Retail is ok, it’s easy and a good part-time job to have if you are going to school. You don’t make much money though, so if you need lots of money you should consider the restaurant biz or nightlife industry.
where do you suggest getting pretty standard, over-sized black sunglasses from?
steal: aldo splurge: sunglass hut
although i love online shopping, i’m really iffy about buying sunglasses online. if you have a small head/face, you have nothing to worry about; i have a bigger, rounder face so for me it’s absolutely necessary for try pairs on in person before i commit. here are some sites with a decent selection of sunglasses: asos, uo, nasty gal
hi! i've been following you for a while now & love your fashion sense... so i just got these grey suede bootie wedges.. what would you wear with them?
i think the right question is — what would i not wear with them!
i love grey. i love suede. i love booties. i love wedges. your shoes sound amazing, and perfect in every way. i hope they’re platform! ahh, yum… but seriously, i’m sure that shoe goes with everything. are there any specific decorations on the shoe? like metal chain accents, etc.? if it is just plain & simple (just how i like it), there really isn’t anything you can’t wear them with, except maybe a grey pair of pants (yeah… definitely not).
in my head the perfect outfit for those shoes: white sheer-ish button up, black skinny jeans, those shoes, hair up. chic. go get’um.
