When I go shopping, I usually have 3 main style objectives (classic, playful, flattering) that sometimes contradict themselves. So before I buy something, I ask myself the following questions to figure out if it can fall under any of my ‘style categories’.
- Is it chic and timeless?
- Is it fun and playful?
- Do I look good in it?
Sometimes I find a dress that looks great on the hanger, but looks horrible on my body type. For example, I went to ZARA a few weeks back and found a great color block mod dress and immediately fell in love with it. It was white with yellow, green, and blue stripes. I tried it on, and it looked horrible. My legs weren’t long enough to compliment the dress, and the all-over horizontal stripes made my already wide body trunk look even wider with the outline cut of the dress.
I have yet to unpack from my Cali trip (I hate hanging my clothes up) but as I look through my clothes there are obvious themes for each of my pieces. A lot of white/grey/black ‘classic’ pieces, and a lot of really brightly colored pieces. I think it’s important to sort through your closet once every few months just to get a clearer idea of your personal style. It makes shopping that much easier, and it feels good to understand your style sense of self.
